    Greetings everyone,

The few whole-house fans I have encountered so far have been old, and homeowners would ask for them to be removed, but on this project, the homeowners want to keep the fan. The question is if using the fan would create any problems with the new cellulose insulation. The plan is to frame it all around it to keep the insulation at bay and have a rigid insulation /plywood on top, so they can easily open it when they want to use it during the cooling season and close it during the winter. The new framing would direct the air to flow to the rooftop and bounce over the sides to the rest of the attic, with large gable-end vents at each side.
    Partially framed already for my

I think your idea sounds great Luis.   The cellulose shouldn't be affected provided it is behind the dam and air won't be passing through it.  There are a few replacement fan products on the market that are airtight and use less energy.  Please post some pictures of your final product.

If you've been unsuccessful in selling the idea that this whole house fan is should be taken out, then your plan sounds good.  However, please add a tight seal (think window film stuff) in front of the louvers...  those things are drafty...

    cheers
