One of the easiest and most economical retro-fit solutions (actually two) has to do with the weakest link in your building envelope- The Windows.
I'm suggesting these two window upgrades through climate zones 5,6,7 in North America, which includes cold/frigid winters with moderate to heavy precipitation and warm-hot summers. Do you want to replace All your windows with the most modern, high-tech window units for tens of thousands of $$$$ ? Maybe you do, but for most that's not a feasible option.
Consider 1.) Winter Window Inserts that can easily be installed and removed in a matter of minutes. They are custom fit, clear, plexiglass material to your individual window frames (interior or exterior)that for all intensive purposes, improve thermal performance by creating an airtight pocket of space when installed on either side of your window. Added benefits: noise barrier & sudden impact resistant barrier.
2.) Professionally Installed Window Films that create an added U-factor insulation value, just like Low-E glass, and a similar sudden impact glass retention quality. All of this and more for a fraction of the cost and time for total window replacement!

Subject: With Building Efficiency Retrofits, You Really Can Have It All
Jobs in energy efficiency are found in every region of every state. An analysis by BW Research and E4TheFuture shows that retrofitting all U.S. homes constructed before 2000 would create over one million full-time jobs for ten years while saving $66 billion on energy bills and reducing emissions by 242 million tons. Talk about long-lasting benefits!
